Francis is Born
Francis Ngannou was born and raised in the village of Batié, Cameroon. Francis lived in poverty and had little formal education growing up. At 12 years old, Francis started working in a sand quarry in Batié because of a lack of funds. As a youngster, he was approached by various gangs in his village to join them. However, Francis refused and instead decided to use his father’s bad reputation as a street fighter as motivation to do something positive and pursue boxing.
A Love for Boxing
At the age of 22, Francis Ngannou began training in boxing, despite reluctance from his family in the beginning. After training for a year, Francis Ngannou stopped training due to an illness. He did various odd jobs to make ends meet until at the age of 26, he emigrated to Paris, France to pursue professional boxing.
Meeting Didier Carmont
Francis Ngannou met his current best friend Didier Carmont. Didier helped Francis Ngannou back on his feet by getting him off the streets and acquire a home for himself. Didier is also the one who introduced Francis to MMA.
Arriving in Paris
After Francis Ngannou reached Paris, he had no money, no friends and no place to live. After living homeless on the streets, Francis took a job at the homeless shelter ”La Chorba” where he told the people he wants to become a boxer. Khater Yenbou, the Director of the organization, told Didier Carmont that a volunteer is looking to become a boxer.
Didier introduced Francis Ngannou to Fernand Lopez. Francis began training for free in August 2013 under Fernand Lopez at the MMA Factory. Being a fan of Mike Tyson, Francis was originally interested in learning how to box until he got convinced to get involved in MMA. The rest was history.
In November 2013 the start of an incredible journey was made as Francis got his first Win.
An incredible performance by Francis Ngannou in January 2014 got Francis on the radar of the UFC.
Winner of the Heavyweight Tournament
In April 2014 Francis Ngannou became the winner of his first heavyweight tournament
First Octagon Fight
The first time Francis Ngannou stepped into an Octagon was in September 2014 in Switzerland.
Francis made his promotional debut against fellow newcomer Luis Henrique on December 19, 2015 at UFC on Fox 17. He won the fight via knockout in the second round.
First Fight of the Night Bonus
Francis Ngannou faced Andrei Arlovski on January 28, 2017, at UFC on Fox 23. He won the fight via TKO in the first round. The win also earned Francis’ second Performance of the Night bonus. Francis was expected to face Junior dos Santos on September 9, 2017, at UFC 215. However, on August 18, Dos Santos was pulled from the match after being notified of a potential USADA violation.
Overeem VS Ngannou
In the highest profile fight of his career, Ngannou faced Alistair Overeem on December 2, 2017, at UFC 218. Francis shocked the world with an amazing KO in the first round with a vicious uppercut.
UFC Heavyweight Title Shot
After the devastating knock out against Overeem, Francis earned a #1 spot in the UFC Heavyweight rankings and thus a Title Shot. Ngannou fought Stipe Miocic for the UFC Heavyweight title on January 20, 2018, at UFC 220. Unfortunately, it not went his way. But Francis will be back!
Francis Ngannou Foundation
Francis Ngannou literally fought his way to the top, coming from the bottom. In order to give others a chance to do the same, Francis founded the Francis Ngannou Foundation, building the first official gym in Batié Cameroon. After the first gym is finalized, the foundation is looking to build many more gyms in Africa.
